A group of 11 world-renowned jazz musicians will give free performances at the Da-An Forest Park in Taipei City July 22 and 23, according to the Taipei City Government.
“This is a great opportunity for locals to get up close and personal with these outstanding jazz musicians and enjoy their performances filled with innovative improvisation,” said Hsieh Hsiao-yun, commissioner of the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs.
The event, as the concluding activity of the 2011 Taipei International Jazz Season, incorporates two lively carnivals and two performances.
During the carnivals, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on both days, the musicians will perform as they stroll in four different groups through the enormous park, officials said.
Some will sing a cappella style, others will play the saxophone or percussion instruments, officials said, adding that at 7.30 p.m. the musicians will assemble at the park’s amphitheatre to give actual concerts.
On day one, the musicians will present original works written by themselves, while on day two the performance will feature familiar Latin tunes that the audience can dance to.
According to the city government, jazz heavyweights participating in the event include trombonist Alan Ferber and saxophone player John Ruocco, both from the U.S.; bass player Bart De Nolf of Belgium; saxophonist Rosario Giuliani of Italy; jazz singer Tutu Puoane of South Africa; trumpeter Davie Smith of Canada; and guitarist Joachim Schoenecker of Germany.
